Congressman Veasey Statement on Texas Redistricting Case

March 11, 2017

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, released the following statement after the three-judge Federal District Court in San Antonio issued a 2-1 ruling that the 2011 congressional district maps enacted by the Texas Republican state legislature discriminates against minority Texas voters:

"After a six-year long court battle, I am proud to announce that we are one step closer to restoring the voices of thousands of otherwise disenfranchised Texas voters. Last night's ruling by a panel of federal judges concludes that the Republican state legislature's 2011 congressional maps were drawn to intentionally discriminate against minority voters and actively dilute their voting power. While the creation of the congressional district I currently represent may have resolved some of the court's issues with the 2011 maps, this monumental decision will ensure that African American and Hispanic voters in the DFW Metroplex and throughout Texas are accurately protected at the ballot box for years to come. Voters must have the ability choose their representatives, not vice versa. Last night's court decision is the first step in ensuring that Texas Latino and African American voters' constitutional right to electoral representation is preserved."
